Vacant Dwelling Insurance Extended Definition:

Vacant dwelling insurance is a type of insurance that is offered to dwellings that have become vacant and in any state (new, old, vacation properties, abandoned buildings, etc.). Vacant dwellings are often difficult to cover and not covered under standard insurance which is why vacant dwelling insurance exists.

Dwellings that are considered vacant can be vacant and eligible for the vacant home insurance for many reasons. The main reasons as listed are: 1. the home is up for sale and left unsold on the real estate market; 2. the homeowners were relocated for work related reasons and the home is left unoccupied; 3. the owner(s) of the dwelling passed away and the home is left to an estate and unoccupied.

Coverage for vacant dwellings can (but does not always) include coverage for vandalism, wind, earthquake, theft, liability, excess flood coverage, and others. Dwelling coverage is also available for other types of dwellings including condos, business condos, vacation homes, apartment complexes, buildings, unoccupied rentals, abandoned facilities.

Like homeowners policies, vacant dwelling policies have limits, terms (usually 3, 6, 9, and 12 months), and extra options that are not included in standard vacant dwelling insurance but available as an upgrade.
